Researchers at the University of Alabama have been able to prove that potassium-rich foods such as bananas successfully prevent hardening and narrowing of the arteries - and thus massively reduce the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
For their experiment, the scientists fed mice with low, normal and high potassium content. The result: The arteries of those mice whose diet contained little potassium hardened significantly during the course of the test.

The animals, whose diet was particularly potassium-rich, hardly suffered from hardening of the arteries or a stiffening of the aorta.
The conclusion of the nutritionists who made their study available to the UK Heart Foundation: who eats two bananas a day and thus comes to the recommended potassium of 3,500mg per day, minimizes his risk of heart disease. But you should not eat much more, at least not regularly. Otherwise there is a risk of abdominal pain, nausea and diarrhea.
If bananas are not your thing: potatoes, broccoli, sprouts, fish and poultry are also potassium rich foods.
